It's only Tuesday!?!?! I swear the days go by so much slower when you're working from home. Today was our designated "cleaning day" at the school, pretty much to just empty out desks and take things off the walls. When we finished cleaning and the desks were pushed to the side and the walls were bare, I took a step back and a flood of memories just rushed into my mind. I couldn't believe that the school year was almost done. So much has happened this last year, things I never imagined would have happened. First and foremost a global pandemic. When COVID first struck back in March 2020 I did not think we would still be dealing with this a whole year and a half later. When I graduated school in April 2020 I was so excited to get into the board and start my career, but that didn't happen right away. Thankfully by being positive and patient, in November of 2020 I finally got into the board and I am so grateful of all the opportunities that came from it. Once you get into the board you must do supply work until a contract or a permanent position opens up. I knew that I was going to be bouncing from one school to the other for at least the next year. And in a regular world that would be totally fine, in fact I enjoyed supplying because I get to meet new people and build connections. But I knew that during COVID it would be challenging for me in many aspects. However, I got very lucky and if you have read my previous posts you know that I got a contract a week after starting as a supply- which by the way is completely unheard of. But what was even better was that once that contract ended (because it was only for 2 months), in the same school just across the hall was another job opening and that is where I have been since March.
As I'm standing in this empty room that was my second classroom after being a supply for a week, I couldn't help but smile and say to myself, "Look at what you have accomplished." Ya the pandemic has been pretty awful to me in some ways, but in other's it has opened doors which will put me on a wonderful path for my career. I have met so many amazing students while working at this school, it makes me feel so fortunate to be apart of their educational journey. I have worked alongside two amazing teachers who I feel so lucky to have learned from and built a connection with. I have wanted to work in Kindergarten since the moment I volunteered in one almost 3 years ago and now I'm finally here and making a mark. Many people thought that COVID would be a road block for me, personally I thought it would too. But I pushed through my anxieties because making a name for myself in the board and making an impact on my student's lives was much more important then being afraid. I don't know exactly what's in store for me next year, I could be back as a supply or I could be considered for another contract but regardless of where I end up I am just excited to be paving the way for a career that I have worked so hard to get to.
So that's a wrap for this school year, there are only a few days left until summer break. I contemplated working this summer or taking some much needed time off but I decided that working would probably be my best bet so I will be starting my summer job as soon as the school year is done. I usually work in camps during the summer but because of COVID I was trying to find something remotely since I am still not completely comfortable working in person and also because of my allergies most camps are being run outdoors for safety reasons so I knew that wouldn't be an option for me. But I got lucky and found an Admin job working for a remote summer camp so I think this will be a great opportunity for me to gain some more experience to hopefully open more doors and possibilities for the future.
Thanks for reading and until next time!
Deanna
